Every now and then, I come across a song that seems to strike me in ways that I never was expecting, which is the beauty of music discovery and is what I enjoy most about what I do. With rap and R&B being a large chunk of what I consume on a daily basis, I tend to dabble in the alternative world from time to time. I’ll admit, anything with an acoustic guitar will get my attention nine times out of ten, and that is what captured me with this song. Ryan Mitchell is an alternative artist who uses music as his medium of expression, bleeding pure emotion in every single song of his; all while being super relatable to many fans out there. Making a debut on the platform today, here is “Covergirl” by Ryan Mitchell.
Initially discovering the song on Tik Tok, I saw a video of him playing the song for his ex-girlfriend, which is who the song is about. While she was not happy with the content of the lyrics, I thought this idea was a fresh and new way to get some eyes on the artist, rather than the traditional “listen to my new song” approach that many artists are used to. When listening to the lyrics, I felt that this is something that many people can relate to. What I interpret from the song, is that Ryan Mitchell is looking for someone who can be a better friend to him, rather than just being a pretty face. The cover art itself takes inspiration from Covergirl makeup, which he ties in the symbolism very creatively here; insinuating that his ex-girlfriend is wearing another personality than what people may perceive when they first meet her.
All in all, I believe that the song itself grabbed my attention sonically, but everything surrounding it is what really reeled me in to dive more into his artistry. Ryan Mitchell is a name that we will for sure be seeing a lot more of in the coming years within the industry
