WOAH – [RONSOCOLD] ft. [Yeat]

I always love thinking back to a few years ago and remembering some of the artists I would religiously bump on a daily basis because I give them so much credit for my music taste as it is today, even if it has pivoted or changed over the years. Some of these talents were just making some of the most unheard-of styles that couldn’t be confined to a specific genre or label and considering they had all the freedom in the world to do whatever they wanted, the results were addicting to me, personally.

North Carolina was a state that produced some of my all-time favorite underground phenoms, and it still has a thriving underground scene that I definitely think deserves more shine. Nonetheless, one hitmaker I have always enjoyed is RONSOCOLD, a Charlotte emcee who was pushing the boundaries of what others thought was impossible, and the results were groundbreaking. Admittedly, I kind of lost track of Ron’s whereabouts in recent memory so I wasn’t completely caught up on his career, but when he hit me up and sent through some of his most recent releases, I can’t believe I let myself sleep on him the way I did.

Recently, he has been on an absolute heat streak, dropping songs with artists like SoFaygo, F1LTHY, Jetsonmade, Pasto Flocco, and more, once again proving that even with the label of being an underground artist, some massive names are showing him love because they know how influential his sound has been to the current wave of music. Just a few days ago, he even teamed up with Yeat to bring their song “WOAH” to life, and when I heard it, I couldn’t wait to share it with you all.

Produced by hitmakers like Jetsonmade, Neeko Baby, and Sharkboy, there is a mysterious and funky melody that fits in perfectly with the chattering percussive elements and pungent drums, setting both emcees up for success all-around. Yeat kicks things off with his gritty, individualistic vocals that just bounce around the instrumental effortlessly, and his personality is never something to ignore.

Ron comes in right after, hitting the ground running with a quick and entertaining verse. Here, his voice is riddled with autotune, yet he utilizes it as if it’s another part of the beat as he incorporates so much fun and enthusiasm alongside a clearly impressive skillset that proves why he is a legend once again. Although “WOAH” is exclusively on SoundCloud at the moment, as far as I know, I truly hope to see it hit all DSPs soon so I can listen to it much more regularly, but either way, it’s one of the most entertaining records I’ve heard all month and I’m beyond excited to see what other gems Ron is going to drop as this year continues.
