Whether an artist is from Chicago or not, it seems like this city always has a special connection to so many different talents, which is a large reason why so many emcees refer to this wonderful city as their second home. While Warhol.ss might be from here, Lil Tecca is not, obviously, but his work with us here at Lyrical Lemonade has inserted him into the music scene here, and he knows he’ll always have fans for life as long as he continues to come back.
While these two artists might not be a pair I expected to work together considering their very different sounds, I was super excited when I saw Warhol.ss released a collaborative song between the two entitled “wildin” on SoundCloud, and the results were better than I could’ve ever imagined. Opening with the menoh-produced beat, lighthearted piano keys, tempo-setting percussion, and an interesting drum line comes in for a fast-paced and easygoing base that is right up Tecca’s alley.
In the hook, he delivers some even-keeled bars that he diverts away from all the bells and whistles, but the effortless way he delivers his lyrics is just infectious, to say the least. In his verse, he swings the pitch of his voice in a few different directions, showing off his versatility once again as he blesses us with a verse that I know I’m going to be singing along with as soon as I learn the lyrics, and until then, I’m going to hum because it’s just that good. While I wasn’t sure how Warhol.ss was going to handle this style of production, all of my uneasiness was put to rest as soon as he came in.
When this happens, he continues with his raspy, gritty flow, but he kind of lightens up on the aggressive notes he often utilizes throughout his music, giving us an interesting yet masterful verse that pairs unbelievably well next to Tecca’s portions. I was beyond pleasantly surprised once I heard this record, and while it might be different than what I expected, it was so much better than I could’ve ever imagined, and I certainly hope this isn’t the last we hear from this surprising yet wonderful duo.
