2016 has taken plenty of legends from us, but in the hip-hop world no death was bigger than that of A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg in late March. As A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have shaped the face of hip-hop since their first release in 1990, the timeless People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, but they’ve been inactive apart from some greatest hits collections and solo work since the late 90s. However, in the months leading up to Phife’s death, the entire Tribe was in the studio recording – the result is We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service. This will be the group’s final record, but they couldn’t have ended things on a better note. Not only do we get stellar verses from every member, including the last recorded verses from Phife Dawg, but the guest list is absolutely unreal; there’s features from Andre 3000, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Jack White, Elton John, Anderson Paak, Talib Kweli, and frequent ATCQ collaborators Busta Rhymes and Consequence. If you consider yourself a hip-hop fan, this is a must listen.
Take a listen to We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service here.
