NPR Tiny Desk is, and always has been, a fantastic platform for showcasing music in its purest form. Especially nowadays with the accessibility of DSPs, we can sometimes forget the true power and art and of live performance, but thankfully, Tiny Desk has worked to fill this void. They always seem to get just the right guests for the job, and today, they’ve done this yet again by featuring none other than Lucky Daye, as he performs three songs: “Roll Some Mo”, “Misunderstood,” and “Late Night.”
Bringing along a 10-piece band and even a horn section, this Tiny Desk performance might just be one of my favorites to date. Daye’s music possesses a soulful, enthusiastic tint of groove that you can’t help but love, and furthermore, the sheer control that he displays with this performance is nothing short of impeccable. In all honesty, I don’t listen to Lucky Daye’s music too often, but after seeing this performance, this will certainly change. Daye is an authentic, unbelievably talented performer who seamlessly embodies the lively energy of his New Orleans roots, and if not anything else, this performance is ear candy for those who crave the heart and soul of music in the age of streaming — thanks to artists like Daye, however, this art isn’t lost.
