Now that I’ve been involved with the music world for a few years, I’ve developed friendships with some truly incredible tastemakers, one of which is none other than @kyledoscope. Every few weeks or so, I find myself obsessed with the latest gem of a find from Kyle, and today, this arrives in the form of a stellar song called “Unwind Me!” by Los Angeles group mmmonika.
Right in line with the bio of the group’s SoundCloud, “happy songs for sad people,” this uplifting release uses sun-soaked instrumentation and lively deliveries as its main source of fuel. The vocals, tinted just slightly by a gorgeous, grainy effect, lay gently atop the light-hearted soul of the percussion, and bringing a level of contrast to the table, the lyrics are able to channel frustration in light of such a joyous sound.
Needless to say, there are several layers at hand on “Unwind Me!,” and the result is a refreshing release that I’m sure we can all take something away from. Now only two songs into their career, mmonika’s ability to craft such personal and relatable songs within an accessible sound is absolutely stellar, so I would recommend getting hip as early as possible.
