Unified – [KAMI] ft. [Joey Purp] & [Vic Mensa]

If you’re a fan of Chicago music, there are a few artists and collectives that should be considered household names at this point, even if they’re not exactly at the top of the charts. About a decade or so ago, SAVEMONEY took the city by storm, and with so many unbelievable talents in this group, it was only a matter of time before they broke out and became nationally recognized.

Artists like Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa were obviously two talents who blew up more than anyone probably expected, but they didn’t leave their crewmates out to dry, bringing them along for tours, having them join in on albums, and making sure that everyone was receiving the attention that they rightfully deserved. Although it hasn’t been a thing for quite a few years, Leather Corduroys was undeniably my favorite local duo made up of KAMI and Joey Purp, and their project Season that came out back in 2014 is a tape that literally changed my perception of music as it was in that moment in time.

One can only hope that there is a reconvening of the incredible tag team, but even if that doesn’t happen, they’re still friends and work closely together, as can be seen on their latest song “Unified” featuring fellow SAVEMONEY member Vic Mensa. In the Haze-produced instrumental, we are gifted a jazzy melody along with energetic and triumphant drums and percussive elements as well as a bit of a vocal sample in the background. Joey comes in first, capturing every last ounce of your attention with his captivating and commanding delivery full of assertiveness and skill.

KAMI comes in next, continuing a similarly captivating disposition while switching his flow up to provide even more intricacies to the track. Before Joey rounds out the song, Vic brings everything together with a verse that is full of emotion and insistence, providing even more energy into the latter half of the song in order to continue to pique your attention all the way until the very end. It should come as no surprise that the chemistry between these three friends is unmatched considering their tenure together in the industry, making “Unified” a must-listen track for any fan of the historic Chicago music scene.
