Trench Baby – [Lil Zay Osama]

Chicago-based rapper Lil Zay Osama has been in my rotation heavily the past few weeks since the release of his 15-track album Trench Baby. The melodic rapper has been on my radar for a while, so naturally, I added the project without hesitation when it was released, but it was not until a week after the album’s release that I was able to start peeling back the layers of the project and put into perspective the emotive and chest-aching energy that reverberates throughout the album. With stunning features from G Herbo, Doe Boy, Lil Tjay, and Jackboy, Lil Zay Osama recruits an eclectic group to help bring this project to life and add even more emotional weight to the already biographical nature of the project as a whole. Some of the stand-out songs on the project include the highly popular “61st to 64th,” “Soul Cry,” “Ballin Dese Bitches” and “Shooters.” Each song brings something special to the table while remaining concise in the overarching theme of struggle and triumph. Lil Zay Osama is in no way new, but his presence and overall presentation on his latest release still carries that initial spark that drew us all in.
