It has been quite some time since I tuned into The Good Perry’s music, not for any other reason other than I just kind of haven’t seen anything from him recently. It’s completely my fault, though, because he is still one of the most notable underground names in the entire industry. I was first put onto him when he teamed up with friend and superstar Lil Yachty way back when he was still named Burberry Perry, and he was making some of the most distinctive, individualistic music in the entire Rap scene, so he was always an artist I respected and appreciated. His career has taken many different paths since then, but he’s still making some of the wildest, remarkable music that he deserves so much more credit for, in my opinion.
His project See You There came out almost exactly a year ago boasting features from Nakel Smith, Matt Ox, Nessly, and others, but even with names such as these, he managed to put his own flair on each and every song unlike anyone else ever could. Revisiting this project to breathe new life into it just about a year later, he decided to drop a music video for the Nakel-featured track “Top 5”, and the director SlobberDogg did an absolutely unbelievable job of providing visual elements that complement the hasty, chaotic nature of the record itself, so I couldn’t be more excited for this one.
It opens up with a warning stating that there is the potential to cause seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy, so if this sounds like you, I’d heed the warning on probably pass on this one. However, if this isn’t you, you’ll quickly understand why this warning is necessary because, from the moment the song begins, lights start flashing and neon colors rotate constantly, providing some wildly colorful and disordered elements to the already insane record itself. While the lights and rapidly transitioning shots give a quick, wild momentum, the two artists jump around, headbang, and go crazy as the song continues to take shape.
Nak, at one point, smiles, showing blood leaking from his gums, although his cheery, unphased expression makes it obvious that he doesn’t have the slightest care in the world. His demeanor changes rapidly as he begins to spit his bars, providing an angry, aggressive expression that is elevated by the even wilder, more intense dance moves he’s getting into, such as shadow punches and karate kicks. Perry might have a slightly calmer charisma, yet his mannerisms and liveliness match Nak’s almost exactly. While the scenes they can be observed in seem to take place in a singular videography studio, all the swift, frenzied animations and edits bring this video somewhere out of this world, unlike anything you’ll see all day.
I can’t help but marvel at the transition that Perry has made from the bubbly, more sing-songy style he used to create with Lil Boat to this wild, unhinged genre of music, but I have to admit that I’m here for it. I have to admit that even though See You There came out almost a year ago, I’ve only heard a few of the songs on it and have yet to tune into the project in its entirety, but I absolutely can’t wait to do so after seeing this visual. There is just a different energy that he brings to the table that other artists attempt to provide, but come up short, but knowing Perry’s expertise, he has no trouble doing this himself. Nak always brings the energy, so I’m not surprised at his parts whatsoever, but they’re still incredible and captivating, to say the least. I highly suggest you check out The Good Perry’s latest music video featuring Nakel Smith entitled “Top 5” in order to add some much-needed energy and enthusiasm to the start of your week.
