Cousin Stizz’s album ‘Trying To Find My Next Thrill’ is just over a week away, and the Boston hip-hop forerunner has been going hard in promoting his second full-length project. Today, following the singles “STP” and the City Girls-collab “Perfect”, Stizz adds even more star-power to his roster and teams up with Freddie Gibbs for “Toast 2 That”.
It feels like Stizz is (finally) starting to get his just due from the mainstream hip-hop world, and he sounds aware of the attention he’s getting on this single. “I just made a hit, so let’s toast to that”, he kicks off by boasting on the song’s hook. This confidence exudes from him for the remainder of his following verse, executed with his signature cutthroat delivery and conviction. He doesn’t need to say much to make an impact, and he opts for an effective laidback flow that fits with the steadily knocking beat. Gibbs, who has also been gaining some well-deserved attention this year for his ‘Bandana’ project with Madlib, lights up the beat with his growling tone and an unrelenting flow. Stizz and Gibbs are two artists who don’t rely on many other attributes besides their sheer rap ability to carry them, and on “Toast 2 That”, they prove that they don’t need much else to make a song that hits hard.
