Tic Tac Toe [ilmato] x [Heartgaze]

Tic Tac Toe” is a collab between me, heartgaze, and Chilean artist ilmato. The song was entirely produced by me with additional background vocals from Cece Maravilla and additional guitars from Francisco Chandia. I’m from Argentina (Buenos Aires), and when the song was finished, we finished it over Zoom with Ilmato. Lyrically, the song includes themes of teenage party stories, drinking games, love and all that comes in between. Ilmato sings lines such as “Spin the bottle hasta que yo salga” (spin the bottle until it lands on me), and the hook is a play on words on the traditional Tic Tac Toe game” – Heartgaze

Buenos, Aires native Heartgaze makes his Lyrical Lemonade debut with one of the most creative bangers of the year titled “Tic Tac Toe.” In collaboration with Chilean artist ilmato, the cultural influences are immediately brought to focus via the nonexistent language barrier as the pair primarily sing in Spanish with occasional lines in English. The artist’s vocals are hyper, which fascinatingly complements the bass-heavy production and guitar prominent instrumentation. At the very beginning, the track contains a mysterious house and/or dance vibe, before sonically shifting to a more varied, genre-less identity. With an addictive hook, the title words “Tic Tac Toe” are cleverly juxtaposed with the lyrics in Spanish to draw listeners in to pay complete attention for conceptual understanding. As a novice Spanish speaker, not only did I find myself pausing in between words, but I also replayed the song in its entirety a few times over. Moreover, the carefree vibes felt throughout the track mirror the nature of Tic-tac-toe itself, which is of course meant to be played for fun. My favorite part, however, is around the 2:16 mark, as the offering’s pace slows down considerably on all musical fronts. Similar to a crashing effect experienced after a party, Heartgaze and ilmato’s unique game of “Tic Tac Toe” simmers down following a fiery chain of events mostly left to our imagination. Considering the release is a single, I’d love to hear how the song fits on a potential project in the works. Have a listen below!
