Ever since I was in probably middle school, I have been a massive fan of punk, emo, and other subgenres of rock, yet I thought that it would fizzle out as I got older. Luckily, I was able to witness the two genres collide thanks to one of my favorite artists of the last decade or so, Lil Aaron. He just opened my eyes to so many possibilities and showed me that music can’t be placed into boxes or given boundaries, and I am forever grateful for that.
I’ve also been put on to some of my favorite artists through his work with them, and Lil Lotus is the perfect example. He reminds me almost of an extension of Aaron, so when he releases something, I know it’s automatically going to be right up my alley and an essential listen. Just the other day Lotus decided to drop his song “Think of Me Tonight” which is an all-out anthem for pop-punk fans of all ages, and while I love this record so much, I was even more pumped about the Pix3lface-directed music video.
Starting out, Lotus’s girl is texting him after finding out he is back in town, but he kind of brushes her off by saying he’s tired and he’ll talk to her later, which doesn’t excite her very much, understandably. Cut to a full-on rager in the backyard of someone’s home where Lotus and a full band behind him are performing in the bottom of an empty pool. While he’s performing and having the time of his life, his girl’s friends come over to comfort her as she fires off hate texts left and right.
Eventually, the girl and her friends hop into a car and head to the function, arriving and peeking their heads over the fence as the girl glares at the performance, sending daggers right in Lotus’s direction. Finally, they storm in past security, get through the crowd, and she is right in front of Lotus. Instead of fighting and arguing, as I expected, she actually runs into his arms, giving him a kiss that is comparable to a scene in a movie, rounding things out on a happy and loving note.
If you either weren’t familiar with Lil Lotus before this song or you somehow weren’t a fan, this track is sure to change your mind. He’s clearly as talented as can be, and he just has this way of bringing back a nostalgic early 2000’s style of music without making it sound outdated or corny. This isn’t easy to do, and unless you’re Lil Aaron or Lotus, you really can’t master this without coming off as being cheesy or out of place. Due to this, I respect the hell out of Lotus and his remarkable music, and you should too. While we wait for his debut full-length album ERRØR BØY to release in August, make sure you familiarize yourself with Lil Lotus and his unbelievable new song “Think of Me Tonight” below.
