The Friendship Tape – [Spooky Marvin]

Looking back on my favorite projects of the past few years, one central commonality between nearly all of them is that of creating a world around the music. When an artist is able to introduce listeners to a livelihood and atmosphere unlike their own, the art of transportation through music becomes apparent, often leaving a notably lasting mark on listeners in comparison to regular, mix-and-match albums. Here to walk listeners into a wonderful, weird world of lovable emotion, enthusiastic character, and heart-on-my-sleeve artistry is Spooky Marvin with The Friendship Tape.

Right off the bat, the intro song’s blissful reinterpretation of a Clint Eastwood-esque Western soundtrack immediately caught my ear here. All across the album, Marvin shoots off into left-of-center styles such as this one, but with a personality as naturally alluring as his own, not once does the budding talent miss the mark. Rather, The Friendship Tape continues on its way, making sure to illustrate the sights, sounds, and events that occur along the path, regardless of how off-the-wall they become.

With this, Marvin also proves his colorful palette of ability with this project. As the title connotates, a lot of the emotion and storytelling is quite wholesome and easily lovable, but Marvin maintains such without ever compromising the emotional integrity of his art. From the anthemic nature of tracks like “Grateful” to ingenious transitions in energy between tracks such as “A Veces” and “Sweet Petunia,” The Friendship Tape soundtracks the life and times not just of an impeccable artist, but of a relatable character, and one who represents far more than a few good songs.

Resulting is a reminder that even in a day and age obsessed with immediacy, artists like Marvin are still around, delivering projects that take full grasp of artistic ambition and welcome the idea of absolutely losing themselves within a body of music. Moments like the album’s bright, heartwarming conclusion, “The Sunshine!,” mark the full-circle nature of such a journey, all the way from the blissful beginning to the dramatic final statements.

Furthermore, at least in my own listening experience, I’ve found that by the end of The Friendship Tape, there exists a profound sense of community between the listener and the speaker at hand. More specifically, the concept of including a chorus in the aforementioned outro was what really drove this home for me. The project starts off on unfamiliar territory, but by its closing moments, the sentiment quickly becomes “we’re in this together” more than anything else. Sure, Spooky Marvin is doing the talking, but he takes every chance to come down to eye level, never coming off as “too cool for school” (yes, I’m going with that, as corny as it sounds).

With this, The Friendship Tape is both an escape and embracement of reality filled with overwhelming joy, soaring highs, and unapologetically honest emotion. Spooky Marvin truly delivered one of the best full listens in recent memory, and he trailblazed the way himself, all without losing his individualistic sense of his heart and vision in the process.

To say the least, good work, Spooky. Stream The Friendship Tape below!
