Stay – [Lovsky]

Often times in music, when emotions are at the forefront of creating a song, the finished product just seems to come together so much more honestly and purely. This is why Lovsky has become such a moving artist in my eye, and although I’m definitely new to the sonic world she has been bringing to life, I can tell that her feelings drive her creation which makes her offerings so much more compelling than many other artists who try and fabricate a storyline to achieve the same effect. It’s simply not the same, and you can tell within the quality of the songs that she’s using her real-life experiences rather than making them up in order to tug at someone’s heartstrings.

“Stay” is the name of her most recent single, and it’s a pivotal point in her career because not only is it an incredible record, but it’s the first single she has ever released where she is the producer as well as the arranger of the track. While she takes the brunt of the effort on this song, she also reached out to friends including Scott Tixier, Chase Aaron, Eduardo Josue, and Mike Snell in order to bring various genres together and bring more ideas to life all in one place. There are multiple different variations within the instrumental that are slowly added in and changed throughout the single, constantly rotating the vibe and overall emotions that are being expressed by Lovsky herself.

Starting out on a soft and more fragile note, touching guitar strums are displayed without any other instruments, allowing for Lovsky’s voice and message to be at the forefront more than anything else that could possibly impede on her words. As she sings, her words are delivered carefully and meticulously, yet there is a conviction behind her lyrics that give off a sense of arrogance that grows as she moves on throughout the song. As elements are slowly added in, she begins to hum angelically during some sort of bridge, and as this portion unfolds, you just feel like a change is about to occur as the guitars begin to get slightly more intense.

When this switch does occur, strong drums and Trap-like percussion enter into the scene, completely changing the overall disposition of the song in a much deeper, almost lustful fashion. Even though the lyrics remain the same, Lovsky’s attitude becomes more apparent and she changes her enthusiasm along with the production, complementing the change of the vibe seamlessly. This remains for the duration of the record as background hums are sung angelically and add even more depth to the track than ever before. As the beat breaks down even further, Lovsky’s secondary vocals repeat the same message over and over again, beckoning one of the major questions she’s been trying to figure out throughout the multiple different previous portions of the record.

As for the music video that was shot by Cami McCullough, Lovsky ended up showing off even more of her talents by actually directing and editing the visual as well, proving that not only is she an incredible songstress, but she is obviously capable and skilled beyond the music itself. From the outside looking in, this might not be the highest production value video you’ve seen considering it almost looks to be shot on an iPhone possibly, but Lovsky’s emotions shine through her expressions and she makes sure that she steals the show yet again despite the simplicity of the visual. After all, one of her main goals of the song was to not distract from the story at hand, and this music video does a remarkable job of adding visual elements that elevate the record without diverting away from the song itself.

She pretty much takes us to the streets of a residential town during what appears to be the golden hour as the sun shines bright on the rising star. As she slowly dances around, she recites her lyrics while allowing her facial expressions to deliver even more of her inner feelings as she hangs out around an old, rusted-up car that actually fits well with her neutral-colored outfit. She is displayed from various different camera angles and in a select few scenes, and through all of the feelings that she’s clearly portraying, she ends the video with a playful smile that not only shows another side of her but also proves her happiness after the major accomplishment she has completed after pretty much tackling this entire release by herself.

Circling back to my initial statement about emotions leading to incredible music, this record is the perfect example, in my opinion. In a statement, Lovsky details the place she was in that led to the creation of this song: “I went through unbearable heartbreak mid quarantine and this song was my saving grace. Given the state I was in, music was the only comprehendible form of expression and coping. It taught me discipline and focus because I was determined to write and produce this song start to finish. So, the words spilled out of me, the melody flowed easily…it felt like the biggest relief when I was able to portray my exact emotions.” While no one wants to or expects to go through these very harsh realities, it takes a special person to not only prevail through them but wear their heart on their sleeve and reveal themselves to the world like this, so I give Lovsky all the credit in the world. This is only the start for her too, which is absolutely unbelievable, and I can’t wait to see what else she has up her sleeve because I have no doubt in my mind that it’ll be extraordinary. For now, make sure you familiarize yourself with Lovsky and her brand-new record entitled “Stay”.
