Machai is an artist who I had heard of a few times over the years, but I somehow never got around to tuning in. While I don’t know much about him at all, after my one homie sent me a few songs and told me how essential it was that I get him on my radar, I knew I had to stop sleeping and listen up. And boy I’m glad I did because it turns out that the Redding, California native is making some of the most unbelievable music in the entire industry, and I’m clearly not the only one sleeping on him.
One of the songs that was sent to me was called “Somebody” and while it came out a little over a month ago, I couldn’t help but write about it after realizing how dumb I have been for being so ignorant when it came to listening to this hidden gem. Produced by DarkBoy and Vendr, things open up with a few synths that sound retro, almost as if they were taken right out of the Stranger Things soundtrack, and they’re eventually paired with crisp percussion and booming drums for a very lively, animated instrumental that is as energetic and entertaining as Machai.
When he comes in, his naturally higher-pitched vocals shine through and would sound impeccable without any beat whatsoever, but the fact that he just bounces around on this production with ease just tells you all you need to know about this talented artist. He almost sounds like a mix between Lil Uzi Vert and Swae Lee, at least in my opinion, and that’s a combination I never knew existed, but I’m beyond grateful for. He just effortlessly makes his way throughout this track, easily switching up from bouncy rap cadences to strong notes that he stretches out affluently, and I feel like this is the perfect introduction to the rising California star.
Even though Machai is a new name on my radar, he’s definitely a name that I’m beyond excited to know about now. He’s been making music for years now, so I have an entire rabbit hole that I get to go down in order to experience all of his other music, and while he is already paving a way for himself that’s promising and notable, he is only just getting started. I can’t wait until the rest of the music world catches onto Machai because when that happens, it’s going to be a fireworks show for the ages. With that being said, make sure you tune in to one of Machai’s dopes new songs called “Somebody” as soon as you possibly can.
