Small Town Friday Night – [David Morris]

The unpredictable and ever-so-odd infusion of hip-hop into country music as of late has probably been one of 2019’s weirdest, but most interesting cultural contributions. Now, more than ever, we’re seeing hip-hop artists bend themselves into a genre that once was deemed mutually exclusive, and for whatever reason, it’s working. I mean, on paper, the idea of throwing 808s and some hi-hats on a country song is absurd, but for some inexplicable reason, it works too well to ignore. Today, one of my favorite artists to exist in this intersection of genres — David Morris — is here with a brand new EP, Small Town Friday Night.

Just 6 songs, this offering combines the liveliness and joy of a small town on a Friday night with simple, yet deeply effective storytelling. All of Morris’ lyrics are dead on-point, and while his version of a good time may be quite different from most other rappers out there, you can’t deny that there’s something deeply exciting about each and every song on Small Town Friday Night.

From “Like a Farmer” to “Old Town Road,” I never would have guessed that hip-hop and country music could have reached such an intriguing intersection, but nevertheless, they did, and it’s showing through on incredible projects such as Morris’ latest.

That said, don’t get left behind — be sure to stream Small Town Friday Night below and let us know what you think in the comments!
