Skelly – [Lil Gnar]

It’s no secret that music, pop culture, and social trends all go hand in hand, but it seems like now more than ever, artists draw tons of inspiration from what they see on television, in sports, and in fashion as well. Whether emcees are rapping about the latest designer garment to release, sports superstars, or make references to movies, they always seem to try to incorporate these things into their music, and I love witnessing the crossover first-hand. At this point, if you haven’t heard of Netflix’s hit series Squid Game, you might be living under a rock, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you’re missing out on one of the biggest series on the streaming platform.

It was only a matter of time before a rapper referenced the series, and when I saw that one of my favorite artists Lil Gnar not only referenced it, but used the theme song as a sample and headed to the games himself in his latest music video for his song “Skelly”, I was seriously blown away. This KP Beatz and Rokonthetrack- produced song is a hit, but the Highdeas-directed music video for the track brings it to new heights, so I couldn’t help but talk about it.

Opening up, Gnar heads out into the street as the haunting song plays before coming across one of the show’s trademark business cards, turning it over to reveal the number to call. As soon as this happens, he is transported into the world of the game, wearing the main character’s number 456 on his green tracksuit as he is surrounded by the masked guards. While everyone in the show might’ve been scared for their lives, Gnar seems to be in control, and as he tries to scratch the cracker or play red light, green light, he seems to pass every game with ease and confidence.

By the end, he ends up taking out one of the guards, proving his dominance in the game before things come to an end. Any artist could’ve taken this concept and half-assed it, but Gnar went above and beyond to make sure this visual wasn’t even slightly tacky, and that’s something I wholeheartedly appreciate. Whether you’ve seen the Netflix series or not, you need to experience Lil Gnar’s remarkable new music video for his song “Skelly” as soon as you get the chance.
