I’ve truly only known about Guapdad 4000 for the better half of a year, but ever since I found out about him, I rapidly became a fan faster than I do for most other artists. I used to see his name and dismiss him because I thought of him as more of a meme than an artist, but after taking one listen to any of his songs, it’s obvious that he’s the real deal, even if he sprinkles in some jokes and puns here and there. What’s even more impressive is the fact that he hasn’t released a cohesive project since 2019, yet his consistent string of singles has not only kept him relevant, but they’ve possibly made him more popular than ever.
Most recently, Guap teamed up with producer !llmind as well as West Coast legend P-Lo in order to bring a brand-new song to life entitled “She Wanna” as well as a remarkable new Chris Simmons-directed music video. In the song, !llmind brings an extremely minimalistic beat to life through a groovy, bouncy bassline and crisp percussion, and while this might seem like nothing, it is absolutely insane how catchy it is. P-Lo handles the hook, and although he pretty much repeats the same phrase over and over as Guap provides some ad-libs, he does so with such swag and confidence that it’s impossible to not want to rap right along with him.
As Guap comes in for his verses, he remains more serene than ever, and while he never gets overenthusiastic or very fervent, he also has a similar confidence to P-Lo while he makes his way throughout the verses full of flexes and brags. Whether he’s talking about the women he has over or the way he sends them home (on the bus because he’s banned from Uber), he never fails to incorporate a few jokes with some seriously impressive flows, so I have to admit that he has another hit on his hands with this one.
When it comes to the music video, Guap finds himself in a nice home as he wakes up next to a few lovely ladies in his insanely vibrant pajamas full of silk and pink poofs around his wrists and waist. When it comes time for P-Lo’s hooks, the iconic rapper brings a few inanimate objects to life by implanting his face on them, including doors, books, and walls, among other things. In the second verse when Guap begins to full out whisper his lyrics, he seems to get with a woman who is pregnant before curling up in the fetal position while imaging himself inside of her stomach as well. At the end of the day, this visual is as inventive and colorful as Guapdad is himself, so it’s a must-watch for any fan of the Oakland entertainer.
On the link to this song on Spotify, Guap proclaims this song as being the “Whisper Song” of 2021, obviously giving his own take on the Ying Yang Twins’ classic crunk anthem that released about a decade and a half ago. If you’re familiar with that record, then it should come as no surprise when listening to the similarities between the two renditions, and while both of them have bounce, I’m all here for this new version. After listening, it’s clear that this isn’t a song to show kids of any age, but if you’re old enough to hear some raunchy lyrics and see a few risqué moments in the music video, then you need to put “She Wanna” at the top of your list of new music to check out immediately.
