It’s been a couple of years since we’ve heard new music from (Sandy) Alex G, but he’s returned in stellar fashion this year with “Gretel”, the first single in support of his upcoming album, House of Sugar, due September 13th. In 2017, Alex dropped his Rocket project, and also accompanied Frank Ocean on his summer tour.
The instrumentation and overall progression of the three-minute “Gretel” makes for one of the strongest lead singles of the year, sealing House of Sugar as a record to look out for later this year. The track starts and ends on uneasy notes, featuring ominous chord progressions backed by atmospheric synthesizers that resemble a droning siren. Beautiful strings and feel-good acoustic chords fill in the remainder of the track, along with haunting vocals from Alex that have a sense of urgency to them.
