Not very long ago at all, my friend put me onto wolfacejoeyy and his song “peaceofmind”. This record was obviously my introduction to the Staten Island talent, and considering it was so soft, emotive, and R&B-driven, that is the lane that I expected him to stick to. I realized that I am always one to say expect the unexpected in the underground music scene because emcees are just hungry to show off their skillset and diversity, so I shouldn’t be surprised when someone like joeyy puts out something entirely different even just a few weeks later.
I knew that when the homie hit me up and told me about his newest song “RUN!”, it was going to be added to my must-listen list, but what he never even told me was the fact that this track was produced by Kimj, who is one of my very favorite producers currently, as well as SEBii, one of my favorite artists out right now, period.
Now, I knew before even pressing play that this would be a complete change of pace from the other song I had heard, but what I also didn’t realize was just how perfectly joeyy would be able to adapt and roll with the punches. On this record, there is a very bubbly, bright piano melody that is joined by some uncharacteristic instruments for a very robotic-sounding foundation that I personally love listening to.
As joeyy sings throughout this relatively quick record, his vocals are pure and honest, but this is impacted by the vocal effects that are utilized on his voice, bitcrushing them just enough to fit the exact vibe that the beat brings forth without completely mutilating them to the point of no return. Although. “RUN!” was not the song I was expecting to hear from wolfacejoeyy, it made me realize just how insanely versatile he is, making him someone I am beyond eager to listen to more of as soon as I get some free time.
