Especially since stumbling upon his ingenious rektless variety pack, I’ve found myself intrigued by the left-of-center approach that Ugandan artist Mwami takes to his music. Not only does he think outside the box when it comes to attracting new and repeat listeners, but the music itself is a product of boundless creativity, reaching a crossroads between experimental and dance music that simply clicks. Today, the outwardly eccentric glory of “Rektless” is here to reach new heights with a well-deserved set of accompanying visuals.
Considering how unique the music is, the “Rektless” music video certainly had high expectations to live up to, but just as we’ve seen with everything else Mwami has done as of yet, the Ugandan talent was sure to go above and beyond with this one. Using an unpredictable roll of scenes, the aesthetic of the visuals stays right on pace with the music, constantly adjusting and reworking its effect-ridden image so as to match the raw energy of the song itself. Even so, however, each frame maximizes its visual impact without getting too far ahead of itself, and furthermore, each shot is sure to strike the viewer without ever actually getting too complex, if you really look into the progression of the visuals.
As a result of this balance, “Rektless” turns this fascinating visual landscape into a seamless extension of the music as opposed to a supplement. The energy in the music is left as the focus of the release, and rightfully so, as Mwami and co-director @spacegray33 clearly show their understanding of why “Rektless” works so well in the first place.
