Princess Forever – [Dreamer Isioma]

Dreamer Isioma’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Princess Forever, is finally here and it’s nothing short of a masterpiece on all fronts. The elaborate and potent body of work from the Nigerian American singer-songwriter demonstrates a noteworthy change of pace from the do-everything-themselves kind of instrumentation that was popularized during the earlier stages of Dreamer’s career.

Princess Forever is an album built around the various experiences that they have been through as life has gone on, exploring themes of love, self-understanding and examination, togetherness, and ultimately, acceptance. While this sounds like a lot, it is all done as tastefully as I could’ve dreamed of thanks to an exciting concept of an alter ego named Princess Forever, someone who shares their story from an alternate point of view.

From start to finish, the album takes us on a sonic voyage that merges so many different genres including funk, psychedelic, pop, R&B, Afrobeats, and even more. In the same breath, it somehow remains more consistent throughout than ever. Dreamer’s vocals are moving and powerful, carrying us through the ups and downs of the alter ego’s journey. The unraveling of topics like deep appreciation and self-discovery are conveyed through touching lyrics that resonate with you on a personal level if you go in with an open mind and a desire to understand the effort’s creative entities to their fullest.

Dreamer has built a mighty fanbase and has received insane support from critics, but fans already know this. Dreamer has already received plenty of support from massive publications as well as other world-renown artists like SZA, Kali Uchis, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, and others. This isn’t surprising, though, because their musical vault has been built with the mindset of tearing down the restrains of a genre.

They have done this by disrupting social norms in an attempt to create a safe space for those who don’t fit into a world of closed-minded individuals, something that this album does incredibly well. Dreamer Isioma’s Princess Forever is a triumphant success that shares the artist’s growth, maturity, and boundary-pushing tendencies as a musician and storyteller. Through lush production, intoxicating vocals, and educational themes, this album further establishes Dreamer’s place in an often-brutal world of music, doing so in a way that others simply couldn’t pull off nearly as gracefully as Dreamer does.
