My home state of Virginia’s up-and-coming music scene is alive and well and today I have the pleasure of highlighting yet another case study of this. An 18-year-old artist from the southwest Virginia town of Gate City, DNL is the stage name of Dacian Lovell who has blown us away with his debut release that has put the up-and-coming indie/alt-pop scene on notice over the last two weeks. Released on April 19th, DNL’s “ppl plsr” is our first glimpse of what the young Virginian is capable of and it’s a must-listen to track for any Still Woozy, Gus Dapperton, or Healy fans who might be looking for a little bit more of an r&b flare. An up-tempo, positive sounding production brought to us by L.A.-based producer, Jonah Bru, the song cuts through with DNL’s soothing vocal delivery and calm storytelling which he effortfully expresses throughout the indie/r&b ballad. A record that tells the story of young love, DNL finds himself trying to please others, but falls short in never finding it to be enough. Certainly a tune that I’ll be spinning throughout the remainder of the spring and into the summer months, be sure to tap in with DNL’s “ppl plsr” using the Spotify link below because this teen is a talent to know!
