Paul Janssen – [ANKHLEJOHN] [Rome Streetz]

2019 has seen an unexpected lyrical renaissance in the underground reminiscent of the Beast Coast days several years ago and this scene is spearheaded by the obvious figureheads from Griselda, as well as artists from MIKE and Earl Sweatshirt’s new sonic movement, and this has produced a number of underground talents that are beginning to carve out their own lanes and identities in these emerging scenes.

Washington, DC’s ANKHLEJOHN (pronounced Uncle John) is one of my very favorites and his new visual for “Paul Janssen” shows incredible technical ability as well as his gruff vocal delivery that immediately endears him to old-head listeners, but he is charismatic enough to connect with a new generation of listeners as well. This instrumental follows the traditional sonic conventions that are beginning to reveal themselves in this lane with a lavish violin sample and subdued percussion, and even more impressive was produced by ANKHLEJOHN as well.¬†Rome Streetz also offers a fantastic guest verse and is now firmly planted on my radar and I am eager to see what else he has to come.
