Simplicity, when done right, is king. Every once in a while, an artist or song will come by that does it all without doing much; it’s about finding that perfect balance between effortlessness and quality, and when it’s there, it’s there. Today, off of his must-listen new EP, Ivy, Highway is here to hit our pages with one of these exact instances in the form of “On My Mind.”
Set as the first of four songs on Ivy, “On My Mind” follows a melodic, almost transcendent line of production from Highway, himself. Each note builds out a lush atmosphere of sound, and for lack of a better description, it feels like a vacation on the beach. As Highway’s hook – “I got a lot of sh*t on my mind” – comes in, “On My Mind” finds itself hitting all the right buttons without needing to try too hard. Quite simply, Highway lays out an undeniable bed of production, and when he jumps on the beat, he speaks his mind; no more, no less. He’s honest, he’s melodic, and as a whole, he ties “On My Mind” together as the kind of song that hits the soul, destined to be left on repeat for hours.
With his new EP out now, Seattle’s own is already making noise as a newcomer to watch out for. “On My Mind” is the perfect introduction to none other than Highway, so don’t sleep. Be sure to sit back and throw this one repeat, just as it was meant to be experienced.
