Nowhere Fast – [Meat Computer]

In a year defined by music that is equally made up of raw pop appeal as it is in unfounded experimentation, it certainly takes a lot to make yourself stand out in those avenues amongst the mass amount of acts that are doing the same thing. Those who do indeed go above and beyond in this manner have reaped the benefits in full however, but yet these artists are few and far between all the same.

It may take some digging to find acts that embody that notion to an absolute tee, but in the case of Meat Computer, their status as one of music’s most incredibly one-of-a-kind figures is extremely hard to miss, and even harder to deny. With an unmatched approach to the worlds of hip-hop, folk, and electronic music all at once, this marvel of a superstar has uncovered – or perhaps created – a musical intersection that has simply never even come close to seeing the light of day up to this point.

That sentiment is on full display yet again with their latest single “Nowhere Fast” — a maddeningly infectious track from practically every single one of its angles. Divided into two separate sections that each have their own unique facets about them, the just under two-minute track makes itself apparent as one of their most essential offerings even after just a few first listens.

The leading portion of the track is a solemnly delivered thrill-ride that sees Meat Computer’s signature high-pitched and squeaking vocals glide elegantly over an instrumental that is unquestionably beautiful in its own right. The beat here truly takes center stage more than anything else, with Slight, Levelup, and Lifted joining Meat Computer themselves in constructing one of the densest, vivid, and gripping instrumentals of the entire year thus far.

But both aspects of the track take up an even greater status once the second half of the song arrives, with a gloomy piano riff leading into a stunningly fast-paced portion of the track out of nowhere. The beat still has that tellingly rich and atmospheric feel about it, and Meat Computer takes advantage on the mic by delivering over this rapid percussion with all the grace in the world.

By the end of the song, it is plainly obvious that this is just another unprecedented musical experience from an artist who seems to create them with practically every single song in their discography. Seemingly topping themselves with every single go-around, only the next offering that Meat Computer comes through with could serve as any sign of what other worlds they may choose to present to us in a musical form.
