Next Day – [D33J]

Ever since hearing his voice on the addictive “Designer Boi” by A$AP Nast, I’ve been paying close attention to D33J – the name behind the chorus of the song, and an artist with one of the most infectious and original styles I’ve heard in a minute. Most recently, the Los Angeles-based talent released a new song and visual by the name of “Next Day,” which we’re here today to shed a light on.

“Next Day” as a whole plays an interesting duality; the song is laid-back, allowing a silky smooth bag of guitar-base melodies and earworm lyrics to lead the way. Meanwhile, the self-directed visual complement takes on quite an interesting creative direction, as it spans through unusual scenes of D33J’s face, a Google Earth-esque tour through a neighborhood, and even a graveyard to tell the story. Detailed in the comments of the music video, D33J notes that the visuals were created with the following method:

All the visuals in ‘next day’ are computer generated, the scenes are based on thousands of self shot/found images gathered over the last month, which then the computer learns to ‘paint’.

This concept isn’t one that I’ve ever seen in the past, but it certainly works, as “Next Day” shines through to become perhaps my favorite release from D33J thus far. His voice is unlike any other, and with the songwriting abilities to make something as catchy as this, not to mention the creative capabilities to make something as unique as this, I don’t think I see D33J slowing down anytime soon. He’s a special talent, and “Next Day” is further proof.
