Martin $ky is an excellent example of letting your art and hard work do the talking. The “Everywhere But Here” EP is a great body of work that definitely makes up for $ky’s absence from Chicago’s rap scene. His new sound is very cohesive and progressive from his last tape, “(Time)less.” On his last tape it felt as though Martin was proving his versatility, but on this EP he displays excellent raps, smooth flows, and hard beats. By the way, he produced the entire project, with one track being co-produced by Chicago super producer, Young Chop. That track, Stay Up 2015, is actually a personal favorite. $ky talks of the rap scene ignoring his efforts to be nice, but he has had to barge his way onto the scene. He has done this successfully by creating his own loyal fan base and putting in the work. He is a hungry artist that won’t take no for an answer. That uncompromising attitude finds him gaining the attention of big names in hip-hop, like a shoe sponsor from Reebok and the EP releasing via Complex.
The EP has stellar features from other well known underground rappers like Casey Veggies, Rockie Fresh, and hometown hero, Saba. I was able to attend Martin’s listening session that took place at The Box near Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. A few attendees included Visual Mecca, Pivot Gang, and was DJ’d by DJ Mile High. Saba came through and performed the EP’s hit single, Reach. It was definitely a sight to see. The video for Reach also debuted on Elevator Mag the day of the EP’s release. Martin was very personable and charismatic through out the entire event. The crowd was very warming and $ky also performed his first hit Pearl Gawd, which went over very well.
Overall, Martin $ky is now a force to be reckoned with that deserves everything that he is getting. He is an example that the show and prove method of indie music is not dead. Check out the Everywhere But Here EP, and let us know what you think.
