LL Presents: The Misogi Q&A

Today we are more than happy to introduce you to 18 year old artist Misogi as he drops off his new EP, “Death Metal.” The young artist is known as a powerhouse producer with credits like Bones, Xavier Wulf, Lil Yachty, Pollari, and many many more. Although he’s known for making trap beats, the young artist is very versatile when it comes to his own music. The singer/songwriter/producer’s new project shows us that. We we’re lucky enough to sit down with Misogi and ask him a few questions about himself and the new project. Check out our Q&A below and be sure to stream his new EP!

JM: Before diving into questions tell our readers who you are.

M: Misogi, or Zain. I like to make music. Trap, emo and alt rock are my main areas.

–

JM: Where are you from

M: London, Pakistan, Dubai.

–

JM: Does most of your musical influence come from the UK or do you look into America’s music scene?

M: For the longest time it’s always been very American, but the new EP has a lot more of a British feel because it’s inspired by post punk, new wave and the new romanticism era. A lot of those bands were British, so that’s why this one will sound a little more British.

–

JM: What’s the biggest difference when you’re making a beat for someone else verses making your solo music?

M: It’s literally completely different now. I make hip hop / trap beats for rappers, my own music is different – I program drums that sound real and I play my guitar, and I sing on my own songs. Think of me as a rock artist, trap producer.

–

JM: How would you describe your music? Is there a set genre?

M: I pretty much work in phases – all of my projects have been different, which sounds cliche but I genuinely mean it when I say that. There are a lot of people who say they’re versatile, but don’t show it. I’m not saying that I’m the KING of versatility or anything, but I definitely have different styles. My first project, “Occult,” was pretty dark and sample based, “Pink2” was edm trap, “Playmisogi” was kinda industrial, Kanye inspired music while the newest EP, “Death Metal,” is all about the 80’s alternative AND popular, post punk, new wave and emo (2nd wave mainly).

–

JM: What’s your favorite song you’ve ever produced?

M: Pretty much all the songs on my new EP. This is the best work I’ve ever done. In terms of producing for an artist, I like “King Of Teens” with Lil Yachty a lot.

–

JM: Who is your number one dream collab?

M: Living or dead? I have one for both – Kanye West, or Michael Jackson.

–

JM: How did “Death Metal” come together?

M: I was thinking very hard about the idea that trap might not last forever, and if you think really hard about it you might come to that conclusion too. A lot of people (seriously, a shit ton of people) think that they’re timeless artists, because of their confidence. But you need to sit down with yourself and REALLY REALLY think about it. If you’re working in something that has predominantly been big for a small amount of time (in the grand scheme of things), then it might be difficult to do that. But I don’t want it to be mistaken, I didn’t change my style because I’m forcing myself to be more timeless or anything, I just had a thought about it, went back to all the music I’ve loved throughout my whole life and decided to be inspired by all of those things rather than this genre I found out about 5 years ago. There’s still trap influences in it, but this is me attempting to be forever or really show you that I am more than what I initially started out as. This is seriously the best thing I have ever worked on. I want to be more than a producer, and I can achieve that. I think this album will last longer than everything else I’ve done.

–

JM: How is this project different from your past projects?

M: In many many ways. To start, there are very few trap moments in this project so when a rare instance of it DOES come up, it feels kinda refreshing and unexpected. I play guitar a lot more on this, every song has guitar on it. my vocals are recorded, WAY BETTER. These songs feel more like real songs, they have a structure to them and variety. Shit’s INSANE. There are a lot of “easter eggs”, a lot of interpolations. In lyrics, titles, chords, etc. and I did this because I’ve always loved hearing small references to other songs in songs, it feels so exciting when you catch it and you’re like “holy shit! I know where this is from” so watch out for that. You might catch some.

JM: One last question for the culture, can you tell us about the rise and fall of McDonalds Hong Kong?

M: Dumb as fuck idea my friends and I had, we used to have an account called Apple Zimbabwe where we would pose as Apple, but from the Zimbabwe departments (not sure if they even have a Zimbabwe department) but I ran it with Cat Soup, Eric North, Filthy Frank etc. and it was doing well. That ended up getting banned, so we decided to do another one later. We came up for the idea of McDonalds Hong Kong (once again using big company and taking a place that people in the west might not know much about) but once I made the account I just planted some real looking tweets and then left it as we were all busy at the time. Nearly a year goes by and turns out the real McDonalds page tagged us in some tweets about the Hong Kong department. With this new power, we went all out on the real tweets followed by depressing tweets to make a perfect mixture. This ended up blowing up way more than apple_zw did, McDonalds finds out after some of the tweets almost hit 100k likes and bans us. It was all fun, we didn’t even want people to think it was real, but most people did. Strange.

JM: Any final words of wisdom for our readers?

M: I’ll probably get a lot of shit for moving my music into this direction, but this is what I need to do because this is how I feel. I’m not going to tell you that whole idea of “do what you believe in” etc. because everyone says that, and if saying that really worked then everyone would do it. I can’t change your mind on that, but you will change your own soon enough (that’s not meant to sound deep or anything I’m trying very hard not to sound pretentious on this last question). Also, don’t post my ep on r/trap PLEASE. It doesn’t belong there.
