J. Lock makes LL debut with a throwback feel in “Selfish.”

Atlanta-based artist J. Lock teamed up with RL for a jam in “Selfish,” a 2000s R&B feel that caught my ear as soon as I heard it. I’m always interested in the blending of hip-hop sounds, and this track is a perfect example of finding the right combination of artists to do so. J.Lock’s initial verse starts the track with a spark and RL’s vocals follow in unison, providing a natural flow from start to finish.

This joint caught my eye for several reasons, the cinematography by Erik White and Russ “Block” Spencer being one of them. I’ll always gravitate toward visuals that feel like a story, something this piece did well. I first noticed a unique widescreen aspect ratio- a facet of films that producers are seemingly experimenting with more often. I love how creatives are finding more unique ways to show their individuality in each video and this production was a great example of it.

The track’s doing fantastically already on YouTube and other streaming platforms, something that comes from the constant work and content being released by J. Lock, who moved to Atlanta to pursue music at 18 after growing up in Mississippi.

2023 is starting strong for J. Lock, and if “Selfish” is an indication as of what’s to come, he won’t be slowing down anytime soon. Watch “Selfish” feat. RL on YouTube below!
