Hostile – [909Memphis]

Although I have been involved in music for years, whether that be including my time with Lyrical Lemonade or my previous experience as a fan, I have nothing but great things to say about the artists I have come to love and appreciate. The underground scene has always been something that has a special place in my heart because until I was put on to certain talents, I was pretty much limiting my admiration to mainstream emcees and nothing else.

Once I finally tapped in with the SoundCloud scene and other up-and-comers, I realized that the boundaries that were put in place on some of the bigger musicians I enjoyed were nowhere to be seen in this mysterious and unique world, and my mind was absolutely blown by just how many different sounds certain artists were making. Without a doubt, 909Memphis was always an artist that I found myself returning to throughout the years because he just sounded like no one else I knew of, and that individuality never changed even for a second over the years.

While it seems like there were certain moments throughout his career where he’d buzz more than other times, I think he is at his very best right now, and his latest EP Whatever it Takes proves this tenfold. Pushing the boundaries has never been an issue for the Nashville by way of Virginia rapper/singer, and the fact that he dipped his toes in the hyperpop waters on this project was something I was waiting for and beyond grateful to witness. Out of all the records on here, “Hostile” was one of my favorites by far, so I knew I had to write about the Nxlvn and Bryants Mindset-directed music video once I saw that it was released.

Although this is a relatively minimalistic and sort of run-and-gun style of music video, Memphy is always the star of the show no matter what setting he is in. The edits in this visual definitely elevate the miniature movie nicely as they incorporate quick transitions, colorful scenes, and various effects that bring the video to the next level without taking away from the remarkable sounds that Memphy brought to life in this track. Although it seems like he should’ve gotten much bigger already, at this point in time, I have a feeling that 2022 is going to be 909Memphis’ breakout year, so get in tune with him on his latest music video for “Hostile” before you go and check out the rest of this awesome EP.
