Homeboy Sandman is without a doubt one of the more impressive lyricists in hip-hop. Just last year he worked with Edan on “Humble Pi”, a mind-bending and thought-provoking record that showed the two’s commitment to making boundary-pushing rap music. Now he’s back in 2019 with a new single, produced by Aesop Rock, titled “West Coast”, fresh off signing a multi-album deal with Mello Music.
He’s worked with Aesop Rock as early as 2015, and the two complement each other well. The beat on here is pretty typical coming from Aesop, somewhat minimal with some nice quirks in the instrumental, overall allowing Homeboy’s raps to shine through on the track. The song is about two and a half minutes long, and Homeboy makes it look easy, literally rapping for the entirety of it, scattering some interesting wordplay and rhyme schemes throughout the track.
