Longevity, especially in the current climate of music consumption, has become somewhat of a rarity. Sure, there are plenty of acts who have mastered the art of hopping onto a buzzing sound and running up the numbers for a few months, but these artists aren’t the ones who stick around for much longer when the trend runs dry. Rather, it’s the artists who pave their own lane and give the world something they haven’t heard that tend to stick around. Put simply, you can’t build a strong foundation on the volatility of a trend or a style, and here to demonstrate this is a Massachusetts-bred duo by the name of Brevin Kim.
Equipped with a boundary-breaking sound, the latest from Brevin Kim — a song and video entitled “hangover” — acts as the group’s first release as signed artists and moreover, their first big opportunity to establish a strong foundation for their career. Needless to say, the two went above and beyond expectations.
In a sonic sense, “hangover” throws traditionality out the window by clashing and meshing genres to no end. From the guitar-based instrumental to the feverish, pop-induced deliveries, the entire song exists in its own world of mismatched styles and textures, with the result being a perfect embodiment of the spirit of pushing the ball forward. Brevin Kim isn’t here to follow trends or take over the charts right away — instead, they’re here to make lasting music and more than anything else, to disrupt with a unique path of their own.
That said, doubling down on this wonderfully unnerving sound, the accompanying visuals for “hangover” act as a vivid reflection of the morning after, when all of the energy, questionable decisions, and stories of the night before become a distant, confusing memory. From drinks to cigarettes to the quest for some sort of lasting sleep, “hangover” hits the nail on the head in every sense, painting a lively picture of a situation I’m sure we’re all familiar with in some way, shape, or form.
With that said, all signs are pointing up for Brevin Kim, and “hangover” truly feels as though it’s a look into the sonic stylings of the future of music. Personally, I find myself loving this release just that much more upon each listen, but don’t just take my word for it — stream the song on SoundCloud here and click play on the video below!
