Chicago might be known for a few distinct forms of music, but there are some other artists who are really inventing new trends that people need to tap in with. Sure, drill or more conscious, soul-inspired genres are what outsiders might recognize as our strengths, and while those emcees are seriously at the top of their game more than most and I love listening to them, I also just really appreciate the people who are pushing their limits and not conforming to what the vast majority of people have just come to expect from the city’s soundscape at this point.
Out of everyone, komla is someone who is doing his own thing in such an intriguing manner, and while he brings a much darker, grittier side of things to the windy city, he does so in a very refined, almost manicured way that seems as if it could very easily appeal to a wider audience once they’re ready to listen. I’m not going to lie and pretend like I have been hip to komla for a while because he is honestly a relatively new artist in my world, but that doesn’t mean that for the brief period of time that I have found out about him, I haven’t been totally enthralled, because I truly have been.
His song “GOAL” was released just over a half-year ago, and considering it is produced by one of my all-time favorite beat smiths of all time in BRENTRAMBO, this song is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, at least from my perspective. Of course, I wasn’t about to let the Omid.Videos-shot music video go by the wayside because it is just too exciting to forget about, so although we are taken on a relatively normal tour of this beautiful city, everyone involved made this one come to life perfectly.
In order to avoid any sort of normalcy, every shot seems to include a fully animated version of komla as he spits his bars, providing such an appealing and unforgettable vibrancy to the film while interesting transitions take us from setting to setting. Not only this, but we are given a sneak preview of another impending hit called “Medicine” right at the end, so while we wait for that sure fire banger to drop, make sure you tap in with the long-time Lyrical Lemonade favorite komla’s latest visual for his track “GOAL”.
