An artist like Funeral is defined by their constant state of evolution. Acts that are as creatively-sound and willing to expand their talents as frequently as they do are seeing themselves become more and more versatile, dynamic, and certainly acclaimed in the process.
It seems as though with each successive release throughout 2020, Funeral tried something new and fresh every single trip. Whether that was through his constant stream of outstanding singles, or the few EPs scattered throughout the year, the newly-introduced Novagang member has made a career out of consistently leveling up for all the right reasons.
This is a continuing trend into the new year with his newly released single “gettingtomyhead.” Yet again, the pop phenom has elevated his game to new and unfounded levels, this time in perhaps his most telling and boisterous manner yet.
Where this track soars over its predecessors is how it acts as an amalgamation of the best aspects of his artistry. The first half of the track sees him flaunting his magnificent pop prowess, with his opening verse being an earworm in itself due to his gripping vocal inflection.
The song sees itself being greatly benefitted by an instrumental that does all it can to add substance to the track’s sporadic and heavy nature. It’s equally spacious as it is direct and thunderous — and it sees itself switching between the two feelings throughout the track’s runtime.
The second half of the track sees an incredible transition into a hip-hop inspired passage where Funeral again shows off another facet of their untapped musicianship — their unmatched flow and lyricism. This not only adds another fascinating aspect to this song itself, but it also serves as a reminder that no one can quite match the same level of sincere talent on the mic as he has compared to his contemporaries.
Perhaps this entire track can stand as a perfect example to that claim; Funeral again took his game from an unmatched place to an even higher one with this song. Only artists who are destined for superstardom can consistently outdo themselves and evolve with each successive offering like he has proven to do — it is safe to say we are dealing with someone who defines the term “superstar” in its most basic definition imaginable.
