In my limited inventory of writing I have for this website, Polo G has found his way into two of my pieces. And yes, Polo is from Chicago and gains great traction and support from consistent site viewers – though that is not why I am writing this article today. The reason is because his latest project Die A Legend, (which released last Friday, June 7th) is just that – legendary. Even the first time I listened through, I instantly knew this project would be one of my favorites of the year. I made it through the entire album without skipping, stopping, or changing a song once. And then I listened again, and again, and again. I’ve now listened to its entirety roughly a half dozen times and that doesn’t include the individual tracks I’ve picked out to listen to on spontaneous occasion. It includes the steam-rolling hits like “Pop Out,” “Finer Things,” “Battle Cry,” and “Pop Out Again (feat. Lil Baby and Gunna),” which have already made their way atop the charts – some even prior to the album releasing. And then mixes in masterpieces like the two-minute firestorm that is “Lost Files,” and brilliant interpersonal storytelling in “Chosen 1.”
My first initial reaction and the question I keep asking myself as I dive deeper and deeper into the project is, how can something so intricate and detailed at the same time seem so effortless? Polo’s realities spilling into different styles and flows find a way to connect to each track in their own unique ways, which gives the listener a multitude of experiences all on one project.
With that being said, Die A Legend will be in the heavy rotation for some time to come in my personal library, and in many others’ involved in the modern hip-hop scene. Polo G’s debut album is one of my favorites in recent memory and with all things considered he will be categorized among the greats if he continues to ride the legendary wave he’s devised.
