Derek Jeter – [Comethazine]

Whenever Comethazine drops a song, I know I need to tune in because the energy and creativity he includes in every single offering are unlike any other artist in the industry. He might be wild and unpredictable, but that’s part of the reason why his music is so fascinating to me because you never know what you’re going to get. It could be a dark, underworld banger or an upbeat, aggressive hit, but either way, it’s going to be a song that’s sure to raise your blood pressure and get your blood pumping.

Most recently, he decided to show off his obvious lyrical abilities and wordplays with his brand-new track “Derek Jeter”. Childboy produced this hit, creating a foundation that is percussion and drum forward with background horns that add a sort of arrogant prominence that couples with Comethazine’s unapologetic demeanor flawlessly. Comethazine begins spitting as soon as you press play, before the beat even comes into the picture, drawing you in from the moment the track begins. As he spits, his words are confident and consistent as he emphasizes and stretches out the final word of each bar, stressing the rhyme scheme in such an infectious manner. He continues a similar flow into the verse, but he does change things up slightly with quicker lines and more spread out portions that end on a similar note as they do in the chorus. His singular verse doesn’t last too long before he goes in for a final hook, ultimately leading us out of the song as the instrumental simplifies and some filtered background vocals repeat the final line of the chorus.

As for the music video, his inventiveness and ability to bring his words to life is uncanny, and it leads to one of the most interesting and well put together visuals you’ll see all day. It opens up on the emcee lying in bed with two half-naked women as he sinisterly smiles right into the camera. When he mentions his girl running from a Pitbull, a low angle is used on the camera as it follows a frantically fleeing girl in a beautifully sunny backyard. As she continues running, Comethazine takes his talents to a well-lit grill before taking a seat at the picnic table behind him, ashing his blunt in the uncut pie that’s sitting on the table in front of him.

Certain shots use perspective to allude to sexual situations before changing the angle and showing the previously running woman chowing down on some corn on the cob. Soon enough, he takes himself to the couch inside where he has a plethora of weed before talking about his homie taking a whip-it and having a seizure, which is actually shown in the video. The next scene includes Comethazine participating in a spelling bee where he lights another blunt and holds up a trophy, showing off the fact that he beat the nerdy-looking contestants that are standing behind him, pissing them off, understandably.

Other shots show him sitting on the toilet in his bathroom, sending his girl angrily home in an Uber, and reminiscing on how much he enjoyed her company through thought bubbles popping up on the screen. To end the video, he turns on a baseball game where he is actually up to bat with the bases loaded. Although the outcome isn’t shown, a sound effect is played which alludes to the fact that he knocks it out of the park for a grand slam.

Although I can’t constantly listen to Comethazine because I need some differentiation from his aggressive, hard-nosed style, I do always find myself checking out his latest offerings. They’re just so creative and out of the ordinary when compared to other music videos that are released throughout the music industry, so I always enjoy the time I spend listening to his music and watching his visuals. His knack for contagious flows and inventive wordplays is unbelievable, and his attitude itself is enough to keep me and other fans coming back for more. While we await more news on his upcoming project Bawskee 4, make sure you don’t miss out on his latest offering “Derek Jeter”.
