When an artist tragically passes away, especially unexpectedly, wounds never seem to heal fully. As we approach the 1-year anniversary of the awful passing of Chicago’s very own King Von, it definitely seems like the wound is reopening slightly because fans are continuing to remember how promising he truly was as an artist and a narrator. What I also always loved about Von’s craft was the fact that he always made sure that his music videos provided the perfect visual element to complement his lyrics, making them miniature movies that acted almost as documentaries rather than reenactments. This perfect execution is no different when it comes to his latest posthumous music video for his Welcome to O-Block standout track “Demon”.
Directed by Joan Pabon and DrewFilmedIt, Von tells the story of his good friend who was tragically killed outside of a store while the rapper was right inside. After hearing shots, he runs outside to find his friend’s lifeless body on the ground, looking around to see who could have done it, and as this happens, his lyrics describe the encounter perfectly. Another recollection shows another homie of his getting cornered by a police car. While he has no way of escaping, he tries to defend himself against the cop, who ends up firing and ending his life, which is just another heartbreaking memory that Von describes in the record. Finally, there is another scene where Von is surrounded by a bunch of tough-looking gentlemen who walk around shoeless, and when Von tries to give him his pair of Dior Jordan 1s, they all refuse and back away because no one else can handle walking in the same shoes as the iconic artist.
What’s even better is the fact that halfway through the visual’s run time, the song comes to an end, but the rest of the video shows different parts of the music video as Von describes the treatment that he envisioned himself before actually shooting it, so hearing his ideas come to life as they’re shown on screen is truly something that’s out of this world, at least in my opinion. King Von is definitely a Chicago icon, and although his life was taken way too early, his estate is doing a fantastic job of keeping his legacy alive and well, so make sure you check out the brand-new music video for his song “Demon” as soon as you can.
