Deadstar – [Smokepurpp]

Ever since the release of the polarizing hit “Ski Mask” in 2015, Smokepurpp’s elevation has been unstoppable with an evolving sound that has is not similar to any other artist from Florida, which has seen an explosion of rising rap artists in recent times. As a matter a fact, Deadstar doesn’t sound like anything from this planet; the 17 track debut album (if you include the Travis Scott featured hit, “Fingers Blue”, which is supposed to be included in the updated version) possesses a futuristic trap sound and Purpp recruited some real legends like Chief Keef, Yo Gotti, and Juicy J, who make it clear he has entered another atmosphere in this rap game. D.R.A.M. makes a special appearance on “Count Up”, one of the most hypnotizing tracks on the project. Fellow Florida rapper/best friend Lil Pump also has a track on the album which is only seems right considering they have came up in the game together, with Pump appearing in the Cole Bennet directed video for “Ski Mask”, Purpp’s first video to hit one million views. The production credits are unreal as well featuring the likes of Harry Fraud, Nova, Slight, Ronny J, Murda Beatz, TM88, Lowtone, Sonny Digital, and the one and only Lil Purpp. The beats are heavy, mesmerizing, and definitely meant to be listened to with powerful speakers or good headphones. Meanwhile the vocals are all about the energy, which can be humorous at times, a formula that Purpp has carefully crafted and the reason he has been able to gain such popularity. Most recently this momentum has led him to sign with Cactus Jack, Travis Scott’s new record label. Deadstar was released through Alamo Records/Interscope so it is unclear exactly what the label situation is but regardless, Smokepurpp has clearly ascended to new heights and has no plan of slowing down anytime soon.
