Wale doesn’t get enough credit for his diversity. From go-go, to R&B, to trap, the man can hit every style with ease, but I’m always partial to when he takes on a some laid-back, boom-bap type beat because they allow his effortless swagger and dexterous, avalanching flow to really shine through.
That’s exactly what happens on his latest offering “Daylight.”
Short, sweet, and to the point (but still loaded with bars), the D.C. staple waxes poetic about everything from the status of his next album (it’s finished!) to his mental health, and, in true form, he even sneaks in a D.C. sports reference. Light, easy, and free, Wale’s vibes are matched by a clean, understated beat from Chicago’s Thelonious Martin.
Likely just an off-the-cuff release to hold fans over until the album, “Daylight” is still a really stellar release. Hopefully, there’s more like this on the album!
