Surging off of Atlanta’s East Side is Calaso Check who has been bubbling to the forefront of the city’s underground scene for the past year or so and has landed in our pages numerous times now and is poised to take the next step into becoming a member of the established pantheon that is Atlanta artists who are considered to be “on” by a number of different metrics, all of which are looking to be a part of Calaso Check’s bright future. Both his beat selection and rapping ability would make an artist work listening to respectively but this combination leaves Check, and the rest of his 2F Gang for that matter.
He recently unveiled the deluxe version to his latest project Da Biggest Check that added several new tracks to the original and opens with the trunk-rattling intro track “Ice” produced by Franky Esco that Check skates over with his staccato flow that rides perfectly with the beat’s percussive chaos. The next track “Off” was produced by ACT who has been a staple in the Atlanta underground for several years now, mainly known for his work with the immensely underrated 95REDDO who also makes an appearance on this project. Check is joined by his 2F counterparts on the ACT produced “Stuff My Pants” where the trio takes turns floating over the menacing instrumental that reveals both the chemistry and uniqueness of each of their styles. FullyLoadedTana produced track five “Hatin” that is easily my favorite track ever from Calaso Check, mainly because of the uniqueness and unexpectedness of Tana’s instrumental which has a lot of up-tempo characteristics that mirror the Detroit sound but is driven by a synthesized melody that sounds like it’s straight out of an ’80’s sitcom. The weirdness of the beat almost helped Check walk on this beat with his funky and self-assured style that is beginning to have even more lyrical prowess and continually drops gems like “say he don’t fuck with me really just hatin’, say he don’t fuck with me really just can’t” on the track’s hook that is applicable to the lives of almost anyone. REDDO drops off a guest verse on the melodic “Trust No One” that begins to explore the more emotional and harmonic side of Calaso Check’s music that I am looking forward to hearing more of as he continues developing and has a producer like ACT on his side to augment this process. The project’s outro “Just How I Live” is probably my second favorite track from the project thanks largely to the ACT produced instrumental that could not be more perfect for Check’s style and is perfectly paced to suit his flow.
I am really excited to watch 2F continue to develop as artists and build their fanbase across Atlanta and beyond and even though it is still relatively early on for them I am very confident that Calaso Check, YS, and BlueFace Bolo are going to be able to have a lot of longevity in their music careers.
