The midwest has been producing a ton of musical talent over the years, and I feel as if we do not get enough credit for it. Chicago, Wisconsin, St. Louis, Ohio, etc have all had amazing artists come out of their respective regions that have gone on to have massive success. When you think of St. Louis, typically, you think of two people, the legend Nelly and the young goat Smino. However, one artist that I have been watching grow steadily over the past few years is Matty Wood$. He started bubbling up a bit on Soundcloud some years ago, even when he was under his old moniker, but with hard work, determination, and good music, he has become a creative that many people are looking at to be the ‘next’ one out of STL. I personally believe he will have a ton of success in his future, he has both the musical talents + the personality to thrive in my opinion. Read & watch this new interview below, and if you don’t already, make sure you follow Matty on Twitter here!

EM: How would you say your music has progressed since the last time we spoke?
—
EM: What was it like growing up in St. Louis?
—
EM: What is that music community like in St. Louis?
—
EM: How do you think moving to Chicago has affected your career so far?
—
EM: You just dropped a project “The Marvelous Misadventures Of Tony-T”, how did you come up with that title?
—
EM: Can you speak on the Tony-T persona?
Matty: Haha that’s a great question, people have been asking me who Tony-T is. Matty Wood$ is your go-to get high music, that’s me at the end of the day. I be high, but Tone, Tone be high as shit! When you’re in that mode you know, I was making 15 songs a day type shit.
—
EM: How has the reception of that tape been so far?
—
EM: What’s your process like when you put together a tape? Do you just compile as much music as possible and pick & choose afterward, or do you know what songs will be included when you are creating them?
Matty: I have a few tapes so far in my career. On my project “Dope Boy” I just had a bunch of songs + picked. But the other tapes for real just be random, we usually drop an EP before the actual projects themselves. When I am recording in the studio, people around me will let me know what stands out. One song will typically spark the idea + set it off, such as “I’ll Be Fine”.
—
EM: What’s your personal favorite song off of your new project?
—
EM: “Sunday” is your most popular song, what do you think it is about that track that resonated with fans so much?
—
EM: You only have one feature on the new tape, but you don’t have many features in your catalog in general. Is that something you do on purpose or does it just kind of fall like that?
—
EM: You released a vlog not too long ago, is this something you are going to do more?
Matty: Yeah I have wanted to do that shit before but I never had a cameraman available. We just dropped our first one but we have one more longer one coming soon.
—
EM: What’s your favorite part + least favorite part about making music?

EM: You create a lot of weed smoking songs, but I was wondering, what’s your favorite song to smoke to?
—
EM: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
—
EM: Can you speak on the importance of having behind in your camp as you do with Stan + Parker Jazz?
—
EM: Is it tough to translate your listeners to streaming into followers on social media?
Matty: Yeah, but it’s partially my fault too. Because I be high as shit, I don’t be wanting to make Tik-Tok’s and all that.
—
EM: If you could create your own flavor of Backwood, what would the flavor be?
—
EM: Who are some artists out of St. Louis that we should keep an eye on?
—
EM: What’s your favorite food spot in St. Louis
—
EM: Where do you see yourself in five years?
