Jamaican-born & South London raised artist Donalee returns to Lyrical Lemonade with a fantastic visual for her song “Circles.” Produced by Sparbz, the track is my personal favorite off Donalee’s new Cerebrum EP. Set in a quiet night’s evening, the bright blurred lights reflect pure introspective reflection of the vocalist’s tumultuous life circumstances. As a red car drives in slow circles around Donalee, her presence is centered at all times even in moments where the camera spins in a motion frenzy. Stating that she’s “lived and died a thousand times,” an arduous level of insight has been acquired from the hardships she’s experienced, which has made her wise to the point of paradoxical appreciation for struggle. Despite possessing self-awareness of her saboteur tendencies, the circular spiral has become too difficult to stop as she continues to spin out of control both metaphorically and literally while steering the wheel. Hence for this reason, Donalee is both the chauffeur and the passenger, with the latter having no power over which direction to turn to. Sonically, “Circles” is an impressive display of soft R&B vocals over mellow production, and a testament to her ability to craft a record with conceptual narrative.
