Call That Heaven – [Kenneth Cash]

Showcasing once more his unique sonic affinity as both a vocalist and producer, Brooklyn’s own Kenneth Cash has delivered his first single of 2023, “Call That Heaven”. In an introspective yet unanimously relatable offering, Cash delves into topics of escapism, self sabotage, and hope – all tied together into a dreamy soundscape that balances nostalgic Boom Bap percussion with forward thinking Indie-R&B elements. For me, Kenneth’s “it” factor is his consistent ability to align his production, vocal delivery, and lyricism in a way that is cohesive yet keeps me on my toes for the duration of a song and he did exactly that in “Call That Heaven”.

In the ever developing landscape of alternative R&B in which both individuality and community are essential, “Call That Heaven” strikes an equilibrium that empowers people to be the best versions of themselves for themselves and those around them. Reflecting on the track’s personal significance Cash says, “We tend to narrowly focus on the highs without taking into account the lows we often feel afterwards. Those highs are what we call heaven; an incredibly deceitful and personal heaven.” We have all been the victim of self sabotage in one way or another, and Cash’s perspective on experience and growth is something we could all learn from. An anthem of self-love, “Call That Heaven” is the perfect spin for those who need a timely reminder to trust and follow even the most distant glimmer of hope through their bleakest days.
