Bands Up – [Matt Ox]

Few people entered the music industry the way Matt Ox did years ago, and his introduction was met with mixed emotions. In all honesty, I used to be a hater because I just had a hard time wrapping my head around a 13-year-old kid making music the way some street-raised, authoritative emcees were. I guess I was just oblivious to the fact that he was ahead of his time, and while his early cuts still might not be my all-time favorite songs, I have grown to truly admire and appreciate all he has done for the underground at such a young age.

Over the years, he has solidified his spot as one of the most notorious underground emcees of our generation, and after working with countless household names beyond his individual releases, he will always be observed as a true visionary, regardless of what people (myself included) used to think. One of the best parts about such a young musician is the fact that they never seem to run out of energy, so their output usually follows suit, and Matt’s most recent 8-song EP TEENRAVE certainly turned things up all the way.

It kicked things off on a high note with his track “Bands Up”, a high-energy banger that Matt seems to glide over with his smooth and effortless lines full of distinctiveness and charm. So, when I realized he teamed up with one of my favorite underground videographers MOSHPXT, it was essential that I tapped in. This one takes place at some sort of party, serving as the perfect setting for such a lively track, but the effects used throughout were truly special.

While some edits make it look like the clips are lagging or the connection is bad, others show Matt almost moving in slow motion as the rest of his surroundings continue to move at their normal speed. It’s an alteration that makes the musician stand out as much as it contributes an incredibly creative element to the mix, and I am sure glad I didn’t miss out on this release for another second. I suggest you follow suit whether you’re a fan of the young legend or not because if you sleep on this one, I’m sure it won’t be long before Matt Ox drops off another undeniable hit.
