I’ve been a big fan of Seattle-bred and LA-based artist UMI for some time now, and if there’s one development in her artistry that I’ve noticed over the past few months, it’s that UMI’s sound truly knows no bounds. When authenticity and genuine, animated energy are the leading factors of your music, it’s easy to translate these characteristics into whatever sound seems to come naturally, and proving just this is UMI’s incredible new two-track release, Balance.
Housing the songs “Ordinary” and “Down To Earth,” Balance lives up to its title with two different and equal opposites. On one hand, the upbeat, sun-shimmering glory of “Upbeat” is a galvanizing, dance-inducing effort, while on the other, “Down To Earth” is sure to allow for some thoughtful emotional reflection. Both, of course, hold immense value, and the way that UMI so seamlessly balances the scale is simply incredible. This 2-track EP might just be a brief release from UMI to keep listeners hungry for more, but in all honesty, it’s also a perfect capsule of the rising star’s innately entertaining artistry and versatile output.
Only this far into her career, UMI has already proven that she can do all things, and with releases like Balance to attest, there’s no arguing this point — we’re looking at a soon-to-be star.
