Ascension – [Daine]

Pop music as it stands today is boundless in its stylistic influence. This fact is certainly the norm within every single sub-section or scene that makes up the genre in the first place, and because of that fact, artists are practically expected to transcend the once-standard ideals that the genre brought with it even within the last decade or so.

With that being said, this is prompting artists to truly go above and beyond in their creative approaches to the genre; it is no longer about simply “doing things differently,” it is how you do things differently. And in considering this notion, no one has come to embody exactly how to manifest this mindset better than one of pop’s next superstars-in-the-making in Daine.

The young and prolific act out of Melbourne, Australia has proven time and time again to be one of the genre’s most eclectic and simply unignorable artists to arise as of late, and it is all-too-obvious to see why considering her ethereal, harrowing, and unmistakably resounding artistic status — taking sounds both new and old and crafting what can only be described as a creative makeup all to her own.

Her most recent release “Ascension” is the next track up following a number of incredible offerings throughout this year, and in the process, it has cemented itself as arguably her momentous one yet in its own status alone.

True to its title, the track’s sound and structure alike place the listener on an uphill rise that begins from a subdued chorus – sung ever-so-blissfully with her incredibly precise vocals – that eventually evolves further and further into an explosive and earth-shaking climax as more and more instruments are added and the song’s overall weight increases bit by bit.

Daine’s aforementioned vocals stand out even amongst the captivating instrumentation here, as her unmatched tones come to adequately correspond with the song’s intensity as it steadily rises in the process. How well she accomplishes this thematic and profound approach through the tonal makeup of the track corresponds beautifully with the equally daring and intensive lyrical themes that she provides, practically solidifying the track’s exceptionally cinematic nature in the highest of places.

What ends up resulting from all of this is an unforgettable and remarkably impressive experience of a song, absolutely proving how unmistakably distinct Daine’s approach to pop music is beyond a shadow of a doubt. To think that she can pack this much creative energy and artistic prowess into one brief offering is a marvel in itself, and it begs the question as to what she can do with an even more free-forming and spacious setting moving forward.
