It has been about six months since we last heard from St. Louis hitmaker Comethazine, but even with this half-year hiatus, his aggressive tone and even more violent lyrics still ring through loud and clear in the minds of fans. There’s just no way you can exit one of his songs without feeling slightly uneasy about your own safety even if his messages are guided at someone else, because he just has this tone of voice that is addictive yet antagonistic, causing any sane person to feel anxious. Somehow, this is a quality that keeps me coming back to his music, and whether you’re at the gym or at a party, he always manages to get your blood pumping.
His post-Pandemic break has finally come to an end with the release of his brand-new single entitled “Air Max”, and he is at the top of his game once again with this hit. An off-putting, somewhat mysteriously haunting violin takes over the melody while forceful, eardrum-shattering drums and rattling percussion pave the way for Comethazine to go crazy and get into your head yet again. As he begins to spit his first hook, he somehow remains calm while heightening his aggression more than ever before. Certain words are recited with elevated enthusiasm while others are subdued, stressing certain bars more than others but still getting his message through loud and clear. His ad-libs are absolutely screamed in the distance, sometimes including onomatopoeias while others just repeat certain lyrics, but either way, they heighten the attack he is putting behind each and every word.
For his somewhat concise verse, he sticks with a similar cadence to the one he uses in the hook, but he does take certain moments to switch things up and go in different directions, ultimately sticking with a rhyme scheme that is consistent throughout the entire song. After one more chorus, the beat breaks down slightly and simplifies before he goes in for one final hook, leading us out of the song in an unsettling manner once again. Lyrically, he mixes in heavy themes of violence with tales of his drug-dealing past, as well as subtle flexes regarding designer clothing and other topics.
The visual that accompanies this single does a perfect job of complementing the song and although it might be somewhat minimalistic, this simplicity ensures that his message comes through your speakers as clear as day and leaves no room for any uncertainty whatsoever. When we first see the rapper, the camera is zooming in on his still body as he death stares into the lens, showing one other person facing the other way while an RPG rests in between the two individuals. He has this troubling smile on his face while he spits his bars in his Givenchy sweater as his friend smokes a blunt in the middle of an abandoned warehouse of some sort.
The only other scene that is utilized throughout shows the rapper alone in a hallway within the same building, and it’s here that he gets slightly more enthusiastic with his hand movements as he acts out most of the bars he’s spitting. This video omits pretty much any animations or effects, but the camera movements mimic the bounce of the instrumental and accompany his movements flawlessly, ultimately elevating this music video to new heights.
Although I’m not positive, I’ve heard rumors that this new song is a single off of the fourth installment of his Bawskee series, but if this is true, I couldn’t be any more excited. His attack is at an all-time high and although he might be considered an antihero within the Rap game, this is a quality that fits him perfectly. The drums within the beat go absolutely crazy and the unnerving violin-driven melody pairs with his angry delivery effortlessly, so it makes so much sense why he decided to hop on this beat. Now that his pause in releases has come to an end, I can’t wait to see what else Comethazine has in store for fans, but while we wait and see, ‘Air Max” is sure to get your heart racing and put your anxiety levels through the roof in the best possible way, so make sure you take some time and check out the brand-new track as soon as you can.
