On January 29th, a duo named GOLDSPACE dropped a song that completely took me by surprise and made me an immediate fan. When I listen to most music, it takes me a bit to fully figure out the parts that I like most, but when it came to this up and coming act, it was a no brainer that their sound would be stuck in my head for a while. The song called, “Bad Love” is one of the most infectious offerings that you will listen to. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard a song that was so well put together like this one. From the production to the vocals, this one doesn’t miss and that’s all thanks to Andre and Maia, the two masterminds behind this artist project. Just last week, I had the chance to catch up with the two of them to learn more about their journey! Check out our conversation below!

Sam: So give me a little background on this friendship. I’d love to hear about when and where you both met.
Maia: So Andre and I became friends, he asked me if I could sing some back up vocals on some of the rap beats that he was making. I had never done that or top lined before then, but he asked me to, so I ended up doing it. We just realized that we really liked working together and he had this beat that he was trying to give to this rapper, but he didn’t end up taking it, so Andre was like, “Something has to happen to this beat”, then we made it and that was the song “Heavy Hitter” which was the first song we put out and we were like shit, this is fun. So that’s kind of how we started and that was about three years ago!

Sam: Dope, that’s really special. Andre, I’d love to get your perspective on it as well.
Andre: Yeah, I was just always making beats. I grew up in Seattle and I definitely grew up listening to a lot of grunge music and classic rock and then got into more of electronic and hip-hop and rap in middle school. And then, when we met at Berklee, she was leaning more towards a lot of pop and R&B, so that SZA album CTRL just blew my mind and that was just a huge inspiration for us at the time.

Sam: So individually, how did you both get into music? Tell me about your upbringing and how that affected your pursuit in music.
Maia: My family doesn’t play music, but they love music you know? I grew up in a house where music was just always being played. When I told them I wanted to do music, they were really supportive of that, so I was lucky to grow up in an environment where I was put in stuff to be able to try it out. When I was in like 5th grade, I was begging for a guitar and they got me a guitar and lessons. I was also in choir and that was very important to my family. I remember being in Choir and just knowing that I wanted to be a singer. Then when I got in to middle school and got in band with other kids, that’s when I knew that I wanted to be in a band one day and become a rockstar. That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to play rock songs. So yeah, then I just kept doing it. I was actually in a punk rock riot girl band in High School. I played drums in it. It was the most fun I’ve ever had ever and then, I went to Berklee and met Andre and we just clicked and we knew this was it. I never thought I’d be making pop music. I think me in High School would definitely be upset about that, but it’s all good.

Sam: And where are you from originally? I forgot to ask.
Maia: San Francisco!

Sam: Amazing! And Andre, what was it like for you growing up in Seattle? How did that have an influence on your music style/taste?
Andre: I think my story is a little bit similar to Maia in the sense that none of my family played music, but I always grew up listening to it. My mom would play Led Zepplin, The Who, just these classic bands. And same thing, I begged my parents for a guitar and they got me a guitar and when I was like 8, that started my musical journey. I got into guitar, bass, cello, and piano. Bass was my thing for a bit. I was playing in Jazz bands and stuff like that. When I started getting into rap and hip-hop, I started becoming obsessed with sound and learning what production was and mixing and engineering as well.

Sam: Now, for the exciting part! Tell me how ya’ll have been feeling in regards to the reception of this song. People are hitting me left and right, because I’ve been putting the song on a bunch of my personal playlists, so tell me how it’s been since the song dropped!
Andre: It’s been amazing
Maia: Truly!
Andre: Yeah, it’s been overwhelming in the best way possible.
—
Sam: So with that, what’s next? Are ya’ll working on anything new?
Maia: Oh, so many. We literally have so many singles lined up for the year, since Covid forced us to make a shit ton of music, so the plan is to have a song in every 6 weeks. It’s going to be singles coming out left and right.
