Listening through email submissions and scrolling through my SoundCloud feed, I couldn’t begin to estimate the number of songs that I listen to all the way through without learning a single thing about the artist at hand. Simple as it may be, not many artists put the heart and soul of their personal lives into the music they make, but then there are artists like Garrett Merk.
Merk just might be one of the most personal, genuinely entertaining artists that I listen to right now. Song after song, he never fails to delve below the surface level, and consequently, every listening experience with his music is an intimate one, leaving me no other option but to run back his songs, again and again. Today, Merk just does this yet again, blessing fans with a thoughtful new offering, “4 Door Freestyle.”
Coming off the heels of his incredible music video for “Wgoimh,” “4 Door Freestyle” allows Merk to channel a reflective state over a beautiful acoustic instrumental that actually uses the same sample as one of my favorite songs, “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow.” Lyrics about his family, drug use, music, mindset, and so much more grace the instrumental with a warm, honest tone, and as he tends to do, Merk slides along the instrumental with one of his finest lyrical performances to date.
To say that “4 Door Freestyle” is well-worth not just one listen, but a few runs back is an understatement. Merk is on a roll, and this song can attest. Stream the new freestyle below!
